WOOD COUNTY — A Marshfield man faces theft with false representation charges after allegedly receiving a refund on a return of used shoes.
Isiah Kohl, 32, pleaded not guilty to the charges at his initial appearance in Wood County Circuit Court on Aug. 24. If convicted of the class A misdemeanor, Kohl faces a sentence of up to nine months imprisonment, a $10,000 fine, or both.
According to court documents, on July 28 Wood County Sheriff’s deputies reported to the Shopko store on the 1300 block of North Central Avenue in response to a call about a fraudulent return. Upon arrival they encountered the store’s loss prevention officer, who said Kohl had bought a pair of shoes earlier in the day.
Kohl reportedly returned to the store later in the day with the shoe box he had left with before. In the box were a used pair of shoes, which Kohl claimed were the ones he had purchased earlier. He requested a refund from the customer service representative at the store, and it was issued to him. Security footage and a store employee from earlier in the day confirmed the shoes Kohl originally bought were new and not the pair he returned later in the day.
The loss prevention officer said he knew it was Kohl from previous dealings with him.
Kohl was released from custody on a $200 cash bond.
He returns to Branch 3 of Wood County Circuit Court on Sept. 25 at 10 a.m. for a pre-trial conference.
