MARSHFIELD — Five Marshfield High School seniors attended the Badger Boys and Badger Girls State Leadership Programs this past summer: Michael Gui, son of Gaogun Gui and Mingjun Fang of Marshfield; Josh Lang, son of David and Marion Lang of Marshfield; Aaron Peters, son of Jay and Rose Peters of Arpin; Jenna Nordin, daughter of Ned and Joan Nordin of Marshfield; and Leo Steiner, son of Robert and Sandra Steiner of Marshfield. The students were selected by high school faculty.
Both including nearly 1,000 participants from high schools all over the state of Wisconsin, the Badger State programs offer young men and women training and experience in all aspects of government and responsible citizenship as practiced in a democratic society.
During the program, participants were grouped into cities and counties to form a 51st state. For the duration of the week, the citizens of this new state carried out all the main functions of state government, using procedures of the state of Wisconsin as their guide. They also had the opportunity to develop a party platform for their national party, similar to the Democratic and Republican Parties.
In addition, a variety of speakers lectured on topics including leadership, motivation, and civic responsibility. This year’s speakers were Governor Scott Walker, Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Ann Walsh Bradley, and Charles Wiley of the Press Corps, among others.
Badger Girls State is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary and was held at UW-Oshkosh in Oshkosh.
Badger Boys State is sponsored by the American Legion Post 54 and was held at Ripon College in Ripon.
