MARSHFIELD — Local gymnast Abby Mitchell, a seventh-grader at Marshfield Middle School, had success at the Regional IV Gymnastics Championships in St. Louis this past weekend.
To qualify for midwest regionals, participants needed an all-around score of 34 at the USA Gymnastics State Meet held in March. Mitchell earned a 36.665 all-around score and placed in all events, taking the gold in vault and silver in all-around.
At the regional championships Mitchell placed in all four events and took fourth in the all-around. She competed against 21 other girls from seven states, including Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, and North Dakota.
Mitchell is currently enrolled in Marshfield Middle School’s virtual school program so she can train during the day. She trains in Weston at GymSport Gymnastics under the direction of Taj Jefferson. There are 12 girls in her group, and they practice Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 9:45 a.m. – 3:15 p.m. year-round.
