STEVENS POINT — Marshfield junior Derek Michalski earned an individual sectional qualifying spot after finishing sixth at the WIAA Division 1 boys golf regional on Tuesday at Stevens Point Country Club.

Michalski shot a 79 to tie Stevens Point’s Taylor Thomas for sixth place and earn the first of four individual spots at the Division 1 sectional on May 31 at Wild Ridge Golf Club in Eau Claire.

The top four teams and top four individuals not on those teams at the regional qualify for the sectional. The top two teams and top three individuals not on those teams at the sectional will move on to the 2016 WIAA State Boys Golf Tournament at University Ridge Golf Club in Verona on June 6-7.

Stevens Point won the team title with a score of 310. Wausau West (329), Rhinelander (335), and Wausau East (337) also will compete as a team at the sectional. Marshfield finished sixth with a score of 345.

Marshfield’s Grant Michaelis tied for 18th with an 86, missing a chance at a possible playoff for the final individual qualifying spot by just one stroke.

Zach Hanson, Joe Kirschnik, and Brendan Schneider all shot 90s to finish in a four-way tie for 26th place to round out Marshfield’s scoring.

Wisconsin Valley Conference champion Matt Tuman of Wausau East tied Logan Johnson of Rhinelander for the individual regional championship with a 2-over-par 74.
