MERRILL — A week after clubbing Merrill by 12 runs, the Marshfield Clinic Post 54 Senior American Legion baseball team needed a clutch hit in the seventh inning to eke out a 4-3 win in a Wisconsin Valley Legion League rematch Tuesday night at Athletic Park.
Cole Hoffman drilled an RBI double into the left-center field gap to score Paul Maguire with the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh inning for the Blue Devils.
Trevor Schwecke, Jack Donahue, and Maguire had RBI singles in the first inning to put Marshfield up 3-0 early.
Merrill quickly got back in it, scoring twice in the bottom of the first against Marshfield starter Hunter Luepke.
Donahue entered on the mound with two outs in the third and held Merrill to one run, which tied the game 3-3 in the sixth. He gave up just one hit while striking out four.
Donahue and Maguire each had two hits for the Blue Devils, who are now 14-4 overall and 5-2 in the WVLL.
Marshfield plays another league game at D.C. Everest on Wednesday.
