Marshfield Open Tennis Tournament sees several epic battles

MARSHFIELD — The Marshfield Tennis Association hosted its annual Marshfield Open Tennis Tournament on July 9-10 at the Boson Courts near Marshfield High School.
There were 35 participants in the two-day tournament, which featured three flights of men’s and two flights of women’s singles as well as men’s and combined doubles brackets.
Tom Duncan won the Men’s A singles title, beating Kurt Hendrickson 6-2, 6-3, and also teamed with Grant Reckner to win the Men’s doubles championship match, beating Evan Fait and Derek Reckner 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Derek Reckner defeated Fait 7-5, 2-6, 13-11, to take the consolation bracket of the Men’s A singles, and Hendrickson and Tyler Droste won the consolation bracket of the Men’s A doubles by forfeit.
Duane Haakenson beat Brett Haakenson 6-4, 2-6, 16-14 to capture the Men’s B singles title, and Sam Haessly took down Dean Fait 6-1, 6-1 to claim the consolation title.
In Women’s A singles, Betsy Wolf beat Ali Luedtke 6-4, 6-3 in the championship match, and Holly Reckner topped Renee Wesolowski 6-1, 7-5 in the consolation match.
Leah Olsen won the Women’s B singles title, beating Anna Hlavac 6-0, 6-0. Kacy Wesolowski beat Jane Pearson 6-1, 6-1 in the consolation finals.
In the Boys 14-and-under singles tournament, Ryan Paulman won the championship match over Lucas Paulman 1-6, 6-4, 10-6, and Ryan Grissman topped Dillon Scheuer 6-1, 6-2 in the consolation match.
In combined doubles, Elizabeth Manlick and Holly Reckner beat Duane Haakenson and Brett Haakenson 6-4, 6-2 in the championship match. Betsy Wolf and Luedtke edged Bill Enggebecht and Ken Swenson 4-6, 6-4, 11-9 to win the consolation finals.
New this year was a Serve Speed Fundraiser. Evan Fait won the men’s title with a top serve of 77 mph, and Holly Reckner won the women’s competition with a serve of 50 mph.
The Marshfield Tennis Association will host its annual Adult & Junior Marshfield Doubles Tennis Tournament on Aug. 6-7 at the Boson Courts.
There will be two men’s, two women’s, and two mixed doubles flights available for adults, six junior flights based on age, and three adult/youth doubles brackets in the tournament. For more information contact Ali Luedkte at 715-387-6572 or by email at [email protected].
