Words Do Matter program to be held Aug. 22
Presentation covers how to create supportive environments for LGBTQ+ youth
For Hub City Times
MARSHFIELD — On Monday, Aug. 22, from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Marshfield Clinic Center for Community Outreach and Marshfield Area Coalition for Youth will be hosting the Marshfield Area Parent Network presentation “Words Do Matter” at Wildwood Station Pavilion.
Stigma is a combination of stereotypes, prejudices, and discrimination. Without realizing it, the language we use can cause lasting damage. Our choice of words and behaviors often give clues to our beliefs around substance use disorders, mental health challenges, and sexual orientation. The Words Do Matter presentation will cover how the Wisconsin Initiative for Stigma Elimination is helping communities become more aware of stigmatizing language and how to create supportive environments for LGBTQ+ youth.
The event will be facilitated by Marshfield High School Principal Jason Wilhelm. Guest speakers include DaNita Carlson, health educator with the Wood County Health Department, and Brian Juchems, senior director of education and policy at the Gay Straight Alliance for Safe Schools.
To register, contact the Center for Community Outreach at 715-221-8400 or
[email protected] by Wednesday, Aug. 17. Provide the first and last name of participant(s). Free child care is available. If requesting child care, provide the name and age of children.
