WAUSAU — The Marshfield boys soccer team opened up its Wisconsin Valley Conference schedule with a 3-2 victory at Wausau West on Tuesday.
Knotted at 2-2, the tiebreaker was a West own goal 11:59 into the second half.
Alec Hinson scored off an assist from Klaus Friedli just 1:40 into the game to put Marshfield up 1-0.
After West scored twice in a 16-minute span, Luke McCann scored for the Tigers, off an assist from Kade McManus, to tie the game nine minutes before halftime.
The own goal was the only score in the second half.
“I was really happy with our good early start, and we showed several glimpses through the game where we really controlled the ball well,” Marshfield coach Steve McCann said. “There is still a lot to work on and improve, but it is early yet.”
Jared Klein had 13 saves in goal for the Tigers, who are now 2-2 overall.
Marshfield is off for a week before hosting Stevens Point on Sept. 6 at Griese Park in its home opener.
