Courses offered on mental health in the K-12 classroom

MARSHFIELD — UW-Marshfield/Wood County is offering two classes geared toward teachers, coaches, mentors, parents, and anyone who interacts with K-12 youth.
Abnormal Psychology in the K-12 Classroom: Addressing the Mental Health Needs of Students & Teachers will be held Nov. 28 – Dec. 5 from 6:30-8 p.m. The class is led by UW psychology professor Jeffrey Amundson, has a fee of $19, and allows participants to gain a deeper understanding of various mental health issues as they relate to student and teacher performance as well as learn to recognize and understand abnormal behavior, including current theory and research on abnormal behavior and approaches to management and treatment.
Research Methods in the K-12 Classroom: Enhancing Teacher Effectiveness will be held Nov. 30 – Dec. 14 from 6:30-8 p.m. This class is also taught by Amundson, and the fee is $29. Those taking the class will gain a deeper understanding of various research methodologies in order to improve teacher effectiveness as well as discover research techniques and design in order to develop effective assessment procedures and how research results can be used to improve teaching practices.
