MARSHFIELD — The Marshfield Madrigals, the carol-singing choir of high school students, will be performing at different locations around Marshfield during this holiday season. The annual Madrigal dinner, which is sold out for this year, will be held Dec. 3 at Marshfield High School.
“It’s a night where music is the main focus, and (the performance) shows what 20 beautiful voices can create,” said junior Morgan Listle.
Students audition to be a part of the Madrigals for a multitude of reasons.
“I’ve always aspired to be a madrigal singer,” said senior madrigal Logan Haws.
“My sister was a madrigal, and I always wanted to be like her,” Listle added. “I became a madrigal because music is my passion. … I have a hard time dealing with anxiety, and music seems to be the only thing to relax me and build my confidence.”
First soprano Samantha Peterson recalled, “I used to sing along with the madrigals when they came to sing at Madison Elementary. At our first performance (this year), a little girl came up … and hugged some of the Madrigal girls. I hope that we gave her some (of the) inspiration that I had received (from the Madrigals) so many years ago.”
Madrigal songs are a challenge compared to those in the students’ daily choir class. Songs are sung in Latin and other foreign languages without an instrumental accompaniment.
“I love the baroque-style music. I have learned so much and developed as a singer,” said Rhianna Brunson, who sings second soprano.
“The Marshfield Madrigals are a group of talented musicians that make beautiful music. More than that we are a family who cares for one another,” said senior Kaitlyn Schneider.
