MARSHFIELD — Following recent common council action, visitors to the Wildwood Park & Zoo will soon see a new addition to the grounds: a statue donated by sculptor Clyde Wynia.
According to Wynia, the statue will stand 15 feet tall and will feature a crane with several cattails around it, similar to an existing statue situated near Marshfield’s Washington Elementary School.
“(City staff) came out and looked around and decided that is what it would be,” said Wynia.
During a Nov. 14 Board of Public Works meeting, the board recommended accepting the gift, providing an acceptable liability was prepared by the city attorney and it was placed inside the confines of the zoo.
From there it was placed on the consent agenda and approved during the Nov. 22 Marshfield Common Council meeting.
“The city poured a concrete slab in anticipation of the statue being placed just outside the fence on the south side of the zoo,” explained Steve Barg, city administrator. “But with the plan changed to put this statue at another location within the zoo property footprint, that slab will be repurposed for another zoo-related use at some future point. “
“It is undetermined if the statue will be installed this spring,” said Parks & Recreation Director Justin Casperson. “Access to some areas is limited because of Rotary Winter Wonderland, the ground being very soft, and Mother Nature could freeze things up quickly. If it is not installed this year, it will be installed in 2017.
“The statue donated by Clyde Wynia will be a wonderful addition to the zoo and compliment the projects being completed.”
