MHS students participate in job shadow program

MARSHFIELD — Marshfield High School’s Career Pathways teacher Ryan Moore and Pathway Partners Mentoring Program Director Beth Albee collaborated to bring students and businesses together this December. Students identified a career interest as part of their Career Pathways classroom work, and business professionals in the community responded to requests to allow students to shadow them in their business or conduct informational interviews.
In preparation for the job shadow or informational interview experience, class time was devoted to completing a career cluster inventory, identifying a career interest, filling out an application to participate in this project, understanding the expectations in a business setting, video and role playing of proper interview techniques, researching the business and career, and asking questions based on students’ learning objectives. The learning experience concluded with a classroom discussion of the experiences, completion of student reflections, and writing a thank you note to the participating business professionals.
Student comments included:
—“This experience helped me open my mind to how I can connect things that I like into job opportunities.”
—“Your time helped persuade me to continue down the path I’m on and reminded me of the passion I have.”
—“I learned how wide of a range of abilities and skills that are necessary to be in your position and how effectively you use them.”
Through this experience students gained confidence in creating contacts within the community and awareness of the value of networking and mentoring to help navigate their futures.
Businesses and careers involved included Back Porch Living; the U.S. Army; V&H Heavy Trucks; 2½ Cups Cupcakery and Bake Shop; Younkers; the Marshfield Police Department; New York Life Insurance; Trudeau Construction; Figi’s; The Sports Den; Nutz Deep II; a local author; and various health care professionals representing optometry, occupational therapy, mental health therapy, sports medicine, and nursing.
