Early goals push East/Merrill past Marshfield boys hockey
Tigers fall to 0-2-1 in Wisconsin Valley Conference

MERRILL — Wausau East/Merrill scored three times in the first period and held on from there, beating Marshfield 4-2 in a Wisconsin Valley Conference boys hockey game Tuesday at the Merrill Area Recreation Center.
Austin Burgenor scored 1:32 into the game, and East/Merrill added two more goals in the first period to take a 3-0 lead.
Zachary Schmidt scored eight minutes into the second period on a power play for the Tigers (1-6-1, 0-2-1 Wisconsin Valley Conference), but East/Merrill (2-2, 1-2 WVC) added another goal early in the third to regain its three-goal lead.
Marshfield’s final goal came from Ben Baur with 21 seconds remaining in the game.
A.J. Trierweiler had 18 saves in goal for the Tigers, who outshot East/Merrill 40-18.
Marshfield hosts D.C. Everest on Thursday.
