MARSHFIELD — Marshfield business owner Scott Berg of Scotty’s Pizza & Chicken was recognized by the Marshfield Fire & Rescue Department Jan. 5 when members of the department visited the restaurant with a small fleet of fire trucks.
For the past 12 years, Berg has supplied the pizzas annually that serve as a reward for the Marshfield area class that is the most involved during the Marshfield Fire & Rescue Fire Prevention Week program.
“It encourages the kids to do our assignments that we give them and it just pushes out the department message so much more,” said Ed Erickson, deputy chief of fire prevention.
“Every year we come up with a contest for the students to work on to promote fire safety, and every kid that turns in a poster gets credit, but the classes that (participate) 100 percent get in a drawing to have the pizza party, so this year it was at St. John’s school,” he added.
The contest is part of a program schedule that includes mapping and exit drills in the home, testing the smoke detectors of two households, and other activities to promote fire safety.
Berg was presented with two plaques to acknowledge his ongoing support of the fire prevention program.
“I was surprised. I knew that they were going to give me a picture, but I had no idea that it would be anything like this,” said Berg.
