Pittsville man charged with strangulation and suffocation

WISCONSIN RAPIDS — A Pittsville man was charged with a felony count of strangulation and suffocation following an incident in a Wisconsin Rapids home on Jan. 7.
According to the criminal complaint, Wisconsin Rapids police were dispatched to a home on the 900 block of 28th Street North in the city of Wisconsin Rapids following a report from an anonymous caller. The caller stated that there was a female inside the residence “crying and screaming.”
Upon entry of the residence, police found Wyatt E. Luther, 19, of Pittsville standing in the living room of the home, and a female subject was lying on the floor between the living room and the bedrooms of the residence.
Luther admitted to pushing the female and placing his hands around her neck in an alleged attempt to strangle her.
Luther had previously been charged in Jackson County on a felony count of burglary and had been released on bond with the condition he not commit any further crimes.
He was charged with a felony count of strangulation and suffocation, felony bail jumping, and disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor.
Strangulation and suffocation and felony bail jumping are Class H felonies. Each charge comes with a maximum penalty of $10,000 fine and/or six years in prison.
Luther is scheduled for a preliminary hearing and arraignment on Feb. 1.
