Anthony Kanable, Bentley Schwanebeck-Ostermann win second career individual titles for Tigers

STEVENS POINT — Twelve of Marshfield’s 14 wrestlers placed in the top three, and two won titles to lift the Tigers to the championship at the Wisconsin Valley Conference Wrestling Tournament on Saturday at Stevens Point Area Senior High.
Combined with its perfect 6-0 record during the dual meet season, Marshfield captured its first overall WVC championship since 1958.
Marshfield finished the tournament with 225.5 points, more than 50 ahead of second-place Wausau West (171). West also ended up second in the overall team standings, and D.C. Everest took third.
Senior Anthony Kanable and sophomore Bentley Schwanebeck-Ostermann each won their second career WVC individual titles for the Tigers.
Kanable beat Dylan Trigg of Stevens Point 7-1 to take the 138-pound title, and Schwanebeck-Ostermann won a major decision over Max Benitz of Wisconsin Rapids 14-2 at 160. Kanable won the 126-pound championship in 2014, and Ostermann was the 145-pound champ last year.
Seven other Tigers finished second, losing in the championship round of the seven-team tournament.
Tanner Kanable (120), Caden Pearce (132), Nolan Hertel (145), Sam Mitchell (170), Alex Brost (182), Conner Peterson (195), and Sam Bauman (220) were all runners-up for Marshfield.
Shane Westerhausen (106), Caden Dennee (113), and Brayden Richardson (126) each finished third for the Tigers.
“As a program, I am extremely proud of how far we have come this season,” third-year Marshfield coach Jackson Hein said. “Anthony Kanable and Bentley Schwanebeck-Ostermann both earned their second conference title in their respected weight classes. They both wrestled tough today, and it was good to see them get the title.
“Having nine wrestlers get to the finals and come out with two champs shows how close we are to really dominating the tournament. We had some heartbreak losses today as well, but I know that our wrestlers will respond in the right way next week at regionals. The best part about today was that every Marshfield wrestler won matches and battled for their teammates, family, high school, and the Marshfield community. Any time we can walk away from a tournament knowing that our hard work paid off and our team made history, that’s a special feeling.”
The WIAA Division 1 individual regional is Feb. 11 at Merrill High School.
