MARSHFIELD — Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT) Secretary Dave Ross stopped at Roehl Transport in Marshfield April 4 to discuss the transportation budget, transportation solvency, freight traffic, work zone safety, and state and local road projects.
Ross cited that spending was the main concern in dealing with the transportation budget as a number of major highway projects in southern Wisconsin are in currently in progress.
“It’s more of a spending problem than it is a revenue problem because we went out and bought a whole bunch of stuff all at once, and that’s all these ‘majors.’ But if you look at the amount of dollars required to finish those projects, we’re talking not millions but billions of dollars,” Ross said.
Joining Ross for the transportation forum was North Central DOT Manager Russ Habeck, who addressed safety concerns along the stretch of State Highway 97 between Marshfield and Stratford.
“What we’re going to be doing here very shortly is our traffic people are going to be out there looking at three different intersections out there where we’ve had crashes, doing traffic counts at those intersections and then analyzing what we find to see if there is something we can do,” said Habeck.
Habeck also addressed questions regarding repairs on Marshfield’s North Central Avenue between Arnold and Harrison Streets, which have been moved up a year and will begin in 2018.
