MARSHFIELD — The 28-member Columbus Catholic High School Jazz Band competed at the longest running jazz festival in the nation, the UW-Eau Claire Jazz Festival, on April 22.
After finishing third each of the past three years, the Columbus Catholic Jazz Band won first place in its division. Columbus had only earned this honor one time previously, which was in 1997.
In addition, Columbus Catholic senior alto saxophonist Jon Viegut won the Outstanding Jazz Soloist award in his division. With that honor comes a music scholarship to UW-Eau Claire.
The festival, which hosted its 51st year of competition, brings in schools from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Michigan, South Dakota, and Illinois.
Similar to athletics, the competition is split into divisions based on school size. Columbus Catholic competed in Class D, which is the smallest of the divisions.
