Marshfield’s Michalski shoots 84 in first round of WIAA State Boys Golf Championships
Michalski is tied for 61st, 12 shots back of the lead

VERONA — Marshfield senior Derek Michalski shot a first-round 84 at the opening day of the 2017 WIAA State Boys Golf Championships at University Ridge Golf Club.
Michalski is in an eight-way tie for 61st place with the 12-over-par round. Jed Baranzyk of Bay Port and Piercen Hunt of Hartland Arrowhead each shot even-par 72s and hold a one-stroke lead over Matt Polivka of Muskego and Jake Schroeckenthaler of Monona Grove in the Division 1 field.
Arrowhead shot a team score of 303 and holds a one-shot lead over Milwaukee Marquette, the defending Division 1 state champion, in the D-1 team standings.
Michalski played the back nine first and had four bogeys, a double bogey on the par-5 11th, and a birdie on the par-4 14th for a 41. He started the front strong with a birdie on the par-4 first before three-straight bogeys and doubles on the seventh and ninth holes to finish with a 43 and an overall score of 84.
Second-round play begins at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.
