Students speak: Hockey facility
As part of their AP U.S. Government studies, Marshfield High School students researched and compiled information on an issue they cared about and wrote letters to the editor. Hub City Times will publish a collection of their letters.
Dear editor,
Many of us in the Marshfield area love sports, especially high school sports. Our conference, the Wisconsin Valley Conference, is typically considered the most competitive conference in the state of Wisconsin for high school hockey, and many of the teams have an ice arena open year-round. In order to compete in this conference, you need to have a committed team as well as proper equipment available.
Wausau West, Stevens Point, Wisconsin Rapids, and D.C. Everest have ice arenas available all year. It is very discouraging to play against these teams that have such an advantage over us. It seems unfair that they have year-round practices while we only have six months of ice. My team tries its hardest to compete despite the fact that we have only half the practice time.
My proposal is to build a new sports complex for the Marshfield hockey teams and figure skaters as well as many others. It could have areas for basketball, tennis, and a track.
This will help boost our success. The last time the Marshfield boys hockey team had a winning record was during the 2011-2012 season: a record of 11-10. With a new ice arena, players can train and build their hockey skills all year and bring our team back to being competitive.
