MARSHFIELD — This year’s Gary Varsho Baseball League featured a new event for special education students.
Every Child Deserves a Chance to Play day was held June 3 to give special education students, ages kindergarten and up, an opportunity to learn a sport in which they may not otherwise have a chance to participate.
The event was the idea of Taylor Varsho, who majored in special education, and it is tied to a program created by her parents, Gary and Kay Varsho, that helps promote baseball and develop young athletes in Marshfield and the surrounding communities.
“We thought that this year we would do a little something different,” said Taylor. “I am going into special education, so I brought up the idea of doing a special ed. event, and my dad kind of went with it, and I made a newsletter and sent it out to the school districts and all of that.
“We had a great turnout today. We had five kids show up that really love to play baseball, so it was great. It was our first time, and next year we plan to have more days, not just a one-time thing. I am really excited about this.”
Taylor hopes that participants will learn some new skills while developing friendships within the community.
Gary Varsho Baseball is an annual league that begins in April and culminates with a tournament in June.
