WISCONSIN RAPIDS – On Nov. 3, Wisconsin Rapids police attempted to make a traffic stop for a windshield obstruction.
According to the criminal complaint, when police attempted to pull the car over the driver accelerated at a high rate of speed down city streets before turning into a department store parking lot.
For safety concerns, Rapids officers pulled back leaving the driver to evade them.
Rapids officers ran the vehicle license plate number and drove to the address of the registered owner, where they located the vehicle.
The driver, identified by police as Nathanael D. Koplien, 23, of Vesper was arrested and charged with attempting to flee an officer as a repeat defender in Wood County Court.
Records show that Koplien was charged with obstructing an officer in Portage County Court and was out on bond when he was arrested. He also received a misdemeanor charge of bail jumping.
Records further indicate that Koplien was charged and convicted in Dodge County for burglary.
Attempting to flee an officer is a class I felony that comes with $10,000 in fines and/or three years and six months imprisonment if convicted.
