SHAWANO – Marshfield won four individual titles and Spencer/Columbus nabbed three, as the teams placed first and second at the Shawano Wrestling Invitational Dec. 16 at Shawano High School.
Caden Pearce (145 pounds), Nolan Hertel (152), Bentley Schwanebeck-Ostermann (170), and Sam Mitchell (195) won titles for Marshfield, which won the team championship with 265 points.
Spencer/Columbus was second with 173 points, thanks in part to individual titles won by Dominick Wichlacz (120), Hunter Luepke (220), and Logan Zschernitz (285).
For Marshfield, Pearce (16-2) topped Brandon Lucht of Antigo 11-9 in overtime.
Hertel won the 152-pound title with a medical forfeit victory in the championship match. He is now 12-1 this season.
Schwanebeck-Ostermann improved to 16-1, with a 19-3 technical fall victory and a pin in the 170-pound championship round.
Mitchell is also 16-1 this season after earning a pin over Isaac Diaz (10-1) of Oconto in the 195-pound title match.
Gabe Pugh (113), Simon Baity (120), Caden Dennee (126), Payton Young (160), and Alex Brost (220) each went 4-1 for the Tigers. Pugh, Dennee, and Brost each finished second, and Kanable and Young took third place.
“I am really proud of all our wrestlers and how they performed today,” Marshfield coach Jackson Hein said. “The four champs wrestled incredibly well, including Caden Pearce who had a thrilling win in. Caden has wrestled better and better each tournament, and I am really excited to see how his season unfolds as he keeps beating great competition.
“Bentley was voted Most Valuable Wrestler, and also had a great day on the mat dominating all his opponents, including a 28-second pin the championship round. All wrestlers who won the tournament today have put in a lot of time during the off season, and I’m happy to see them reach the top of the podium.”
Wichlacz (16-1) won a major decision 18-6 over Jayson Toellner of Bonduel in the 120-pound championship, for the Rockets’ first individual title.
Luepke and Zschernitz both remain undefeated at 17-0, after earning pins in their respective championship matches.
Marshfield is at Wisconsin Rapids on Dec. 21, and Spencer/Columbus hosts Cadott Dec. 22.
