Auburndale tops Marathon in double overtime
Auburndale pulled off a thrilling double overtime victory over previously unbeaten Marathon, topping the Raiders 63-61 on Dec. 19 at Auburndale High School.
Marathon’s Donovan Free made a basket with 46 seconds left in the second overtime to give the Raiders a 61-60 lead.
Auburndale held the ball, and after a timeout, Cooper Weinfurter kicked the ball out to Cameron Ertl, who drained a 3-pointer with 4.6 seconds to go, to put the Apaches back on top. Marathon’s buzzer-beater missed to give Auburndale the victory.
The game was tight throughout, with Marathon holding a two-point lead at halftime. After each team scored two points in the first overtime, Auburndale outscored the Raiders 5-3 in the second overtime to grab the victory and improve to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the Marawood Conference South Division. Marathon is now 6-1 and 2-1 in conference play.
Cale Jacoby scored 15 points and had six rebounds, Ertl added 12 points, and Weinfurter scored 11 points and had nine assists for Auburndale.
The Apaches shot 52 percent (20 of 48) and made nine 3-pointers, including four from Ertl.
Free had 18 points, including 14 in the second half and both overtimes, for Marathon.
Marshfield pulls record to 4-4
Marshfield used an 11-4 run to start the second half to put the Tigers up by double figures and they led by at least 10 points the rest of the way in beating Merrill 84-63 in a Wisconsin Valley Conference game Dec. 19 at Marshfield High School.
Seth Anderson scored 30 points and Reed Miller added 20 for the Tigers.
Marshfield used a 7-0 run to take a 17-10 lead at 7½ minutes, then led the rest of the way.
Anderson scored 12 of the Tigers’ final 14 points of the first half, and Marshfield led 39-33 at the break.
After a basket by Quinn Steckbauer to start the half for Merrill, Marshfield ripped off an 11-2 run, highlighted by six points from Anderson and a 3-point by sophomore guard Anthony Posteluk, to push its lead to 50-37.
Merrill came as close as 10 on two occasions before the Tigers blew the game open.
A 7-0 run ended with a three-point play by Miller, and Marshfield made all 14 of its free throws in the second half, including six straight from Posteluk in the final two minutes.
Stratford rips Newman
Vaughn Breit and Paul Huther each had 16 points to help Stratford to another victory, as it crushed Wausau Newman Catholic 72-38 on Dec. 19 at Newman Catholic High School.
Stratford rolled out to a 35-15 lead by halftime, on its way to the 34-point win. The Tigers improved to 8-0 overall and 3-0 in the Marawood Conference South Division, prior to a big showdown against Marathon on Dec. 21.
Stratford shot 46 percent (30 of 65) from the field, including a combined 13-for-21 from Breit and Huther.
