Columbus still unbeaten in Cloverbelt
Columbus Catholic outscored Greenwood by 18 points in the second half to beat the Indians 63-41 in a Cloverbelt Conference East Division game Jan. 5 at Columbus Catholic High School.
Columbus Catholic led 29-25 at halftime before blowing the game open in the second half, holding Greenwood to just 16 points.
Nick Malovrh had 16 points and Noah Taylor added 14 points for the Dons, who have won nine games in a row and were 9-1 overall and 6-0 in the Cloverbelt East prior to Monday’s game against Marathon.
Auburndale splits two
Auburndale used a 44-point first half to propel them to a 74-69 victory over Port Edwards in a nonconference matchup Jan. 2 at Port Edwards High School.
Auburndale made nine 3-pointers in the first half, four by Cooper Weinfurter and three by Cason Schmutzer, to open up a 44-36 lead at halftime.
The Apaches made just seven baskets from the field in the second half, but were 13 of 19 at the free throw line to hold on for the victory and improve to 8-2 this season.
Weinfurter scored 25 points and Colten Yeske added 17 for Auburndale in the victory.
Both teams finished with 10 made 3-pointers.
Auburndale lost a Marawood Conference crossover game at Phillips 62-61 on Jan. 5. The Apaches are now 8-4 overall and 5-3 in the Marawood South.
Stratford improves to 10-1
Stratford won a pair of games last week, knocking off Athens 57-53 in a Marawood Conference crossover game on Jan. 4 and edging Stevens Point Pacelli 65-62 in a nonconference game Jan. 6.
Nine different players scored for Stratford in the win against Athens. Benjamin Barten had 13 points and Vaughn Breit added 11 for the Tigers.
Barten and Chandler Schmidt each scored 13 points, Breit added 12, Trent Heckel had 11, and Okley Wrensch scored 10 in the victory over Pacelli.
The Tigers are 10-1 overall and 6-1 in the Marawood South heading into a game at Auburndale on Friday.
