Marshfield third at Sparta
Marshfield had three individual champions and placed third in the team standings at the Sparta Invitational on Jan. 20 at Sparta High School.
Gabe Pugh (113 pounds), Caden Dennee (120) and Sam Mitchell (195) won individual titles for the Tigers, who finished with 159 points.
Holmen won the team title with 269 points, with Sparta second at 176.
Pugh, a freshman, topped Kody Klonecki of Holmen 5-4 in the 113-pound championship match to improve to 30-3 this season.
Dennee (19-7) pinned Carter Vetsch of Holmen in 41 seconds in the 120-pound title match, and Mitchell (31-2) also won by pin, downing Lucas Ingold of Neillsville/Greenwood/Loyal in 5:23.
Tanner Kanable took second at 126, losing in the title match to Mason McMillen of Reedsburg 10-4. Caden Pearce (138), Isaac Slark (182), and Connor Berry (285) each finished fourth, and Payton Young was eighth at 152.
Marshfield improved to 5-0 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference dual meet schedule with a 66-6 rout of Wausau East on Senior Night on Jan. 18 at home.
Marshfield won six matches by pin and two others by forfeit and suffered just one loss in the dual.
Stratford dominates Marathon
Stratford won five matches by pin and seven others by forfeit, as it rolled past Marathon 72-9 in a Marawood Conference wrestling dual meet Jan. 18 at Stratford High School.
Manny Drexler (113 pounds), Derek Kraus (120), A.J. Schoenfuss (132), Jake Drexler (152), and Jordan Becker (160) won by pin for the Tigers.
Stratford won seven other matches by forfeit against the short-handed Raiders.
The Tigers won at Auburndale on Jan. 16, 66-7. Manny Drexler (113 pounds), Schoenfuss (132), Jeremy Schoenherr (145), Jake Drexler (152), Jordan Becker (160), and Hector Rojas (285) all won by pin for the Tigers.

Marshfield snags WVC win
Marshfield won eight of the 11 events and earned its first Wisconsin Valley Conference dual meet victory in the past two seasons, as it downed Wausau East 100-70 on Jan. 16 in its final home meet of the season.
Myles Jensen and Ethan Dagit each won two events, and Dagit was part of two more wins in relays for Marshfield (1-6 WVC).
Jensen won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:04.02 and the 500 freestyle relay in 5:37.26, while Dagit took first in the 50 freestyle (25.12 seconds) and the 100 freestyle (56.66).
Jeffery Berres, Nathan Albanito, Jacob Dick, and Dagit won the 200 medley relay in 1:53.92, and Berres, Albanito, Dagit, and Jensen took first in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:50.08 for the Tigers.

Marshfield loses to SPASH
Barrett Brooks, Dayne Hoyord, and Devon Blaes each scored twice to lift Stevens Point to a 6-1 win over Marshfield in a Wisconsin Valley Conference game Jan. 18 at K.B. Willett Arena in Stevens Point.
Hoyord added two assists and Spencer Wierzba saved 17 of 18 shots for the Panthers, who pull one-half game ahead of Wausau West for first place in the WVC at 6-1 (17-2 overall).
Nick Urban scored Marshfield’s only goal, off an assist from Adam Maki, on a power play at the 10:31 mark of the second period, cutting the Panthers’ lead to 2-1.
Stevens Point responded with four unanswered goals over the final 20 minutes.
Albanito won the 100 butterfly in 1:03.74 and Dick finished first in the breaststroke in 1:11.37 for Marshfield’s other two wins.
Dick was second in the 200 individual medley (2:24.15) and Berres took second in the 100 freestyle (57.37) as well, for Marshfield.
