What you should know about electric space heaters
By Marshfield Utilities
MARSHFIELD – During the winter months when temperatures can be frigid, many people are tempted to use a space heater to cut the chill. There are several points of interest to consider when choosing to use a space heater.
Marshfield Utilities’ Energy & Water Conservation Coordinator James Benson says that a typical space heater uses 1500 watts of electricity, with one hour of operation consuming 1.5 kilowatt hours. At Marshfield Utilities that 1500 watt space heater would cost you .11 cents per hour of operation. While that might not seem like much, it can add up.
“If you operate that space heater 24 hours a day for a full month, it will cost you over $84”, says Benson.
Another consideration related to space heaters is choosing the best location to place it. Care should be taken to avoid damp places or areas with water, such as basements and bathrooms.
Additionally, think about what type of traffic will be moving past the heater. Children and pets should not be allowed near the heaters as they could suffer a burn from contact.
Possibly the largest concern and expense related to space heaters is the damage they can cause if not used properly. Best practices for space heater safety include not using extension cords to power heaters, never leave a running heater unattended, keep heaters away from combustible materials, and only use heaters with a safety anti-tip switch. Benson’s advice is to be sure to read and follow all manufacturer instructions prior to using an electric space heater.
