Marshfield school board drops summer school fees

MARSHFIELD – During its Feb. 14 meeting, the Marshfield Board of Education voted to discontinue charging fees for summer school courses.
Board member Amber Kiggens-Leifheit said summer school produces revenue for the district through reimbursements from the state, and the resources spent on keeping track of the money does not justify the charges.
“Last year, we collected $6,289 in summer school fees,” she said. “These are charged if there is a consumable for class, and if there is, then they can charge the student; but, the DPI (Department of Public Instruction) monitors what we charge.
“It takes considerable staff time to collect the money, account for the money, audit the money, report to DPI, do bank deposits,”
Kiggens-Leifheit said that with the funds the district gets from the state for summer school, the program generates close to $153,000.
“In the big scope of things, what we’re spending in personnel time to track and collect these fees, we are probably spending more than $6,289.”
Of the 76 summer school courses offered, 16 of them included a fee.
The district will still charge for driver’s education courses.
