MARSHFIELD – Two former Marshfield High School athletes are off to great starts this summer in the California Baseball League.
Daulton Varsho is a minor league catcher and designated hitter for the Visalia Rawhide, while his former Tiger teammate Elliot Ashbeck is a pitcher for the Lake Elsinore Storm.
In seven games this season, Varsho was batting .375 with two home runs, 11 RBI’s, four walks, and six strikeouts.
In a 3-1 win over Rancho Cucamonga April 5, Daulton went 2-5 with a run scored, an RBI and a strikeout. At Modesto April 12, Varsho was 2-2 with two RBI’s, two walks and a run scored. Two days later, he was 1-4 with a strikeout and a stolen base.
His two best games have come against Ashbeck’s Lake Elsinore ballclub. In an April 9 matchup, Varsho went 2-4 with two runs scored, a double, a home run, and five RBI’s. On April 11, Daulton had another big day, going 1-2 with a home run, three RBI’s, a walk and a run scored.
In that April 9 showdown, Ashbeck got the best of his former Marshfield battery mate, with a flyball out to centerfield. They almost faced off again, but Ashbeck was pulled from the game right before Varsho led off the bottom of the 8th inning for Visalia. Ashbeck did not pitch in the April 11 matchup.
Elliot had appeared in three games between April 5 and April 12. He threw two innings against Stockton April 5, walking one batter while striking out three. In that April 9th contest with Visalia, Elliot tossed three innings, striking out three batters. Ashbeck did not have a good outing April 12 versus Lancaster, giving up two hits and a run — it was unearned — while walking one and striking out three in two innings of work. With seven innings of work over three games, Elliot has an ERA of 0.00. He has walked two, struck out nine, and has surrendered two hits.
It’ll be awhile before Ashbeck and Varsho see each other again. Elliot’s Lake Elsinore team is at Visalia for a four-game series June 21-24. Through 10 games, Visalia was 6-4 and tied for second place in the California League North Division, while Lake Elsinore was 4-6 and in third place in the South Division.
