GREENWOOD – The Spencer softball team opened up the 2018 Cloverbelt Conference schedule April 24 with a win at Greenwood, as the Rockets beat the Indians 10-2.
Tiffany Meinders picked up the win, throwing all seven innings while giving up three hits and one earned run. She walked four and struck out eight Greenwood batters. Spencer coach Laschel Canfield said after the game that Tiffany was outstanding.
“She hit her spots. Every time there was a pop fly, that’s what we were looking for, that’s where we put it in the zone. She was unstoppable. Going out there in the seventh, you could tell she was getting a little tired, but she dug deep and came up with those last few pitches. Her ball’s got some movement on it. She finds the zone, and if she puts it where she’s asked to put it, good things happen.”
Meinders also had a single, and a three-run home run. Shaelee Neitzel also homered for Spencer, while driving in two runs. Kayla Hopperdietzel had two singles and three RBIs, and Aryiah Schuh singled and doubled.
Canfield said it was nice that their bats finally came alive.
“It was a battle for a while. I hate to see (Kayla) Learman get hurt, and not win with her on the mound. (Once Learman left the game) I think it was a confidence thing. The girls were pretty nervous facing Learman. She’s a great pitcher, and is effectively wild is what I tell them.”
Learman had a one-hit shutout through three innings before leaving the game, after injuring her throwing arm sliding into second base. After that, Amanda Bogdonovich gave up 10 Spencer runs on eight hits in four innings.
Two days later, on April 26, Spencer won again, beating Gilman 9-6. Meinders again was the winner, giving up five hits and two earned runs while striking out 11 batters in seven innings. Offensively for the Rockets, Lexi Baehr doubled and homered and drove in two runs. Schuh tripled, Sadie Mercier had three singles, while Chloe Drews had two singles and a run batted in.
