MARSHFIELD – On May 2, Columbus Catholic Schools held their Fifth Annual Hair Donation event in honor of Barb Billings, the high school and middle school principal who lost her battle with ovarian cancer in 2011.
Specifically, the donations will go to Pantene Beautiful Lengths, an organization that works closely with HairUWear and the American Cancer Society to provide real-hair wigs for women who are suffering hair loss, due to cancer treatments. According to their website, it takes 8-15 ponytails to create each wig.
Participating in the event were 21 donors consisting of six high school students, four middle school students, two students from Our Lady of Peace, two from St. John’s, two teachers, and five friends of Columbus Catholic Schools. Additionally, ten donors contributed their hair prior to or following the scheduled event. This resulted in approximately 123 ponytails, 310 inches, and up to 15 wigs for cancer patients this year. The five-year tally is now at 173 donors, 549 ponytails, 1545 inches, and up to 68 wigs.
Stylists from Fantastic Sams, Split Ends Hair Salon, Evolve Salon by Carmen, Clippe Jointe by Mackenzie, Regis Salon, and Studio 211 helped measure and rubber band the hair, cut it, and then provided free haircuts and styles for the donors.
