MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Tiger football team has improved to 2-0 on the young season, with a week two win at Appleton-West. The Tigers beat West 35-6 Aug. 24 in Appleton, in a game Marshfield led 29-0 by halftime.
Brant Bohman had a big night for Marshfield, scoring three touchdowns. Caden Pearce got the scoring started for the Tigers, when quarterback Ryan Krueger found him on a six-yard touchdown pass with 8:26 remaining in the first quarter. Pearce added 91 rushing yards. After that, it was mostly Bohman damaging West’s chances.
With 6:25 left in the second quarter, Bohman returned a West punt 75 yards for his first touchdown. With 3:20 left before halftime, Bohman found the end zone again, scoring on a two-yard touchdown run. Justin Stanek returned a pass interception 25 yards for another Tiger score as time expired in the first half.
Bohman added his third score with 4:23 left in the third quarter, on a four-yard touchdown run. Bohman carried the ball 13 times for 37 yards. Even though West outgained Marshfield in total yards, Appleton could not turn that success into points, as West scored its only touchdown of the contest with just over two minutes left in the game. Marshfield won the game despite being outgained by West 253-241.
Next up for Marshfield is Hortonville on Aug. 31 at Beell Stadium.
Stratford wins again
Heavy rains, thunder, and lightning merely delayed Stratford’s dominance of Antigo in a non-conference win over the Red Robins Aug. 24 at Tiger Stadium. The Tigers won the game 28-8, and dismantled the Antigo attack from start to finish, and beat the Robins for the second straight year in the second week of the season.
Kade Ehrike led the Tiger attack with 113 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Okley Wrensch also found the end zone twice, including a 73-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Max Schwabe in the second quarter. Wrensch found the end zone again in the fourth quarter, on a 19-yard pass from Schwabe, who completed seven of 11 passes for 124 yards and two scores. Wrensch caught three balls for 106 yards and two touchdowns. Stratford outgained Antigo on the ground 224-31, and through the air 124-50.
As the first half ended, lightning struck and the bleachers and field were cleared for safety reasons. The game resumed nearly two hours later. Stratford improved to 1-1, and Antigo fell to 0-2.
Spencer/Columbus improves to 2-0
The Spencer/Columbus Rockets were battling the Thunder in more than one way last week. The Rockets didn’t let a lightning, thunder and rain delay deter them from wrapping up their second win of the young football season. The Rockets beat the Osseo-Fairchild Thunder 40-20, in a game that covered parts of two days.
The Rockets had built a 12-0 lead by the end of the first quarter on Aug. 24, when the game was delayed, and eventually postponed, because of severe thunderstorms and lightning. The game resumed at 11 a.m. Aug. 25 at Ted Fritsch Field in Spencer, and the Rockets picked up where they left off the night before.
Spencer/Columbus broke the game open with a 16-point second quarter, and a 28-0 halftime lead. Austin Bacon and Carson Hildebrandt each had two touchdown runs in the first half, but Osseo-Fairchild did not go quietly. The Thunder outscored the Rockets 19-12 in the second half on Aug. 25, but it was too little too late, and the Rockets improved to 2-0.
Bacon added a third touchdown run in the third quarter, and Hayden Bauman found the end zone in the fourth quarter to keep the game out of reach. Spencer/Columbus ran 66 offensive plays, compared to 42 for Osseo-Fairchild. The Rockets outgained the Thunder on the ground, 330-161.
Bacon carried the ball nine times for 72 yards and three scores. Hildebrandt led SC rushing attack with 14 carries for 105 yards and two touchdowns. Bauman added nine rushes for 74 yards and a score.
Defensively, Head Coach Jason Gorst highlighted linebacker Eden Jacobson. “I thought (he) really stood out with some clutch plays” Gorst said. “Our return game was clicking pretty good, which set us up with some short fields. Austin (Bacon) and Hayden (Bauman) have some real great open-field moves.”
Spencer/Columbus plays at Fall Creek Aug. 30.
