Laverne “Shorty” Kauffman
Laverne “Shorty” Kauffman, age 97, of Marshfield went to his eternal rest on Tuesday, September 11, 2018 at Marshfield Medical Center in Marshfield, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. A service will be held at 11 AM, Monday, September 17, 2018 at Hansen-Schilling Funeral Home (1010 E Veterans Parkway) in Marshfield. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 9AM until the time of service on Monday. Burial with military honors will take place at Hillside Cemetery.
Laverne was born December 8, 1920, the son of Louis and Dorothy Kauffman in Curtis, WI. On November 2, 1947 he was united in marriage to Angela “Joyce” Becken at her parents’ home in Curtis. She lovingly cared for him through his Alzheimer’s disease until June of this year. He then resided at Three Oaks until the time of his death.
Laverne proudly served his country as a Sergeant in the Air Corps in WWII. He served in Utah and England from Feburary1941 thru December 7, 1944. He never spoke of his time in service until after he went on the Honor Flight at the age of 90. That day was one of the best days of his life and after his return, he would talk to everyone who would listen to his stories.
Laverne had many nicknames, but his favorite was “Shorty”. He was also known as Doc and Short Crotch. He held many jobs over the years but was most proud to talk of the 16 years he was owner/operator of his own candy route. He was dubbed as the Candy Man. His Alzheimer’s brought him back to this time in life often.
Laverne and Joyce, in their younger years, spent many a Friday night playing cards with groups of friends and many a Sunday afternoon dancing to polka music. In the 18 years they had lived at Parkview Apartments, most nights would find them playing cards. They may visit with you during the day, but needed to be home by 7 to get to the dining hall for Sheepshead.
Laverne is lovingly survived by wife, Joyce and 3 children: Arla Kauffman and her 3 children, Dean Dedrich, David and Brittany Theisen, Ronald (Julie) Kauffmen, and Sally (Daniel) Rakovec and their 2 children Tracy (Noel) Felix and Nicholas (Emily) Rakovec. He is also survived by 7 Great Grandchildren, Kade Dederich, Collin Dederich, Nick and Jake Theisen, Noelie, Sam, and Sophia Felix. He is also survived by on sister, Evelyn Frome. He was predeceased in death by 2 grandchildren, Arla Dederich and Jacob Rakovec; as well as siblings, Ethel, Manard and Allen.
The family would like to thank Three Oaks for their wonderful care and for accepting him into their “family”. Their kindness will never be forgotten.
