Meet UW-Stevens Point at Marshfield student: Joe Vance
Joe Vance, 33, is a Tampa, FL, native. He attended East Bay Senior High School and is currently a Pharmacology major in Marshfield.
Q: Why did you choose UW-Stevens Point at Marshfield?
J.V.: I chose UW-Stevens Point at Marshfield for the convenience of being close to home. I am able to still work here in town and not have a long-distance commute in the winter.
Q: What surprised you the most about UW-Stevens Point at Marshfield when you arrived on campus?
J.V.: Being from Florida and having previously attended a large university, I was surprised by how small it was, which turned out to be a very good thing! The professors take pride in every class, and the campus really feels “tight knit.”
Q: Why did you choose your program/major?
J.V.: I chose pharmacology as my focus because I have always had an interest in helping people, and I have always enjoyed interacting with them. Working as a pharmacist would give me the ability to do both of those things, without having to help patients in the typical healthcare setting, which I just do not have the stomach or courage for.
Q: What are you learning about your career field that you find interesting or rewarding?
J.V.: Lately I have been learning how technology will help enhance the field I’m going into. I currently work as a pharmacy tech for the Marshfield Clinic Health System. Working at a pharmacy while attending school during this era of technology and innovation will only help me in the years to come.
Q: In addition to being a college student, what takes up your free time?
J.V.: My beautiful wife, Sarah, helps occupy most of my free time. We love to travel. When I am not with her, I enjoy spending time with friends or you can find me at the gym playing basketball or volleyball.
Q: Who has been your favorite professor or staff member?
J.V.: That question is a tough one. I am really enjoying film studies because I have always loved theatre and movies in general, and now I get college credits for watching and studying them!
Q: What do you plan to do after UW-Stevens Point at Marshfield?
J.V.: After completing my associate degree at UW-Stevens Point at Marshfield, I hope to get accepted into a pharmacology program. My options are open right now, but I plan to decide the best course of action soon.
Q: What is one piece of advice you have for incoming UW-Stevens Point at Marshfield students?
J.V.: Use your resources and stay organized. Staying organized has helped me stay focused on tasks and assignments that are due. OneNote and OneDrive have become my new best friends.
