Shirley Gray
Shirley M. Knox Gray, age 98, of Marshfield passed away Saturday, December 1, 2018 at Bethel Center.
Funeral services for Shirley will be held at Hansen-Schilling Funeral Home, 1010 East Veterans Parkway, Marshfield, on Friday, December 7, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Samuel Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Marshfield. Visitation for family and friends will be from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service at the funeral home on Friday.
Shirley was born March 17, 1920, the daughter of Alexander Knox Sr. and Ella (Eggebrecht) Knox in Tyrone, NM. The family eventually came north to Marshfield, where the Eggebrecht family lived.
Shirley married Garth Gray, but they later divorced.
Shirley attended local schools here and graduated from Marshfield High School in 1938. She graduated from Midstate Technical College for Wisconsin Certified Nursing Assistant. She attended many night school classes at vocational school. She audited classes at UW Marshfield. She was employed at the shoe factory from 1938-1942, worked at the Roddis Co. from 1942-1943. She was a welder at the Manitowoc shipyard from 1943-1944, and the Sturgeon Bay shipyard, and Leathen D. Smith, from 1944-1945. She also helped out on the family mink farm too. She worked at Wing Drug from 1968-1991. Volunteered at St. Joseph Hospital in hospice care in 1992. Shirley did health care at home from 1992-1998. Retired in 1999. Shirley enjoyed cooking, loved to spend time in the kitchen, and had a library of over 300 cookbooks. She was always reading and learning new things.
Shirley is lovingly survived by her daughter, Maureen (Elmer) Handke of Marshfield, their children Jennifer (Robert) Vandeberg of Granton, their children Page and Austin, Jason Handke of Kewaskum , his children Garret, Lorren and Lidia.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parent’s Alexander Knox Sr. and Ella Knox, as well brothers Alexander Knox Jr. And William “Bill” Knox.
