SPENCER — The Spencer/Columbus Catholic football team did what it has done all season on Friday night: get off to a great start.
The Rockets scored five first-half touchdowns and held their opponent scoreless on their way to a dominating 54-8 victory over New Glarus/Monticello in a WIAA Division 5 Level 1 playoff game at Ted Fritsch Field at Spencer High School.
Spencer/Columbus improves to 10-0 and will host Waterloo (7-3) in a Level 2 matchup either next Friday or Saturday. Waterloo edged Prairie du Chien 25-19 on Friday.
Hunter Luepke had two touchdown runs, Noah Zastrow ran 60 yards for a score and caught a 54-yard pass for another, and Jonny Tomke had a TD run on offense and a safety on defense to lift Spencer/Columbus to a 38-0 halftime lead.
Ryan Busse returned a fumble for a score, and Jon Bauer capped the scoring with an 8-yard touchdown run for the Rockets.
“The boys came out and executed in all three phases of the game tonight,” Spencer/Columbus coach Jason Gorst said. “I thought New Glarus/Monticello did a nice job with some early adjustments to their game plan, but we were able to figure it out and play well.”
Zastrow racked up 237 total yards of offense — 132 rushing, 105 receiving — for the Rockets, who outgained New Glarus/Monticello 426-180 and averaged 11.8 yards per play. Spencer/Columbus also forced four turnovers.
