Ruby Semenchuk takes first at Spencer Spelling Bee

SPENCER — Twenty-four students recently participated in the Spencer Schools Spelling Bee. After 10 rounds, fifth-grader Nathan Kieffer and seventh-grader Ruby Semenchuk were the final spellers remaining.
Semenchuk won the event on “pugnacious,” the 125th word spelled at the competition. She now makes a return trip to the regional spelling bee in Thorp.
Each of the 24 spellers was given a certificate and medal. In addition, Kieffer and Semenchuk received trophies.
Regional competition at Thorp Elementary School was be held on Feb. 15. The top four there move on to Madison for the Badger State Spelling Bee, and the top three at the state level advance to the National Spelling Bee.
